In the 1920s a company that sold bacon hired a publicist named Edward Bernays. Bernays was Sigmund Freud's nephew and he is generally credited with inventing modern public relations. The company had been running ordinary ads and wanted more. Bernays told them advertising was the wrong tool.
By his own account he went to a physician and asked whether a heavy breakfast served people better than a light one. The doctor said yes. Bernays claims he then had that doctor write to several thousand physicians asking the same question, collected the agreements, and took the result to newspapers around the country. The headline said doctors recommend a hearty breakfast. Eggs were already on most tables. Bacon was the thing that needed selling, and he sold it by attaching it to something people were eating anyway. The story named bacon and eggs as the example.
Bacon sales climbed. Bacon and eggs became the American breakfast and it has held that spot for 100 years. Here's the part I want you to consider.
Bernays never asked what people should eat. He asked how much. He framed the argument as heavy versus light, and that framing is still running 100 years later. People argue about big breakfast versus skipping breakfast, intermittent fasting versus fueling up. The question of what is actually on the plate is what needs more discussion.
That's the question that matters. Eggs and bacon give you protein and fat. Neither one gives you fiber, and white toast adds almost none. Fiber feeds your gut bacteria, carries cholesterol out of the body, and slows how fast sugar hits your blood. Most Americans get around 15 grams a day when the recommendation is 25 to 38. Breakfast is where that gap gets set, because whatever you skip in the morning, most people never make up by dinner.
So put something with fiber on the plate. Beans, oats, greens, a whole grain, fruit with the skin on. Get something green in early, because most people never catch up on vegetables once the day gets away from them. And if mornings are tight, eat last night's dinner. For most of American history that is exactly what people did, and nothing is stopping you.
